Story

Homa Darabi (هما دارابی), born in Tehran in 1940, was a pediatrician and child psychiatrist and a member of the Nation Party of Iran. On 21 February 1994 (2 Esfand 1372) she took off her hijab in Tajrish Square, poured gasoline on herself, and set herself on fire. She died of the burns in a Tehran hospital the next day. Parvaneh Forouhar, a close friend, said that same month on an exile television call that Darabi had been removed from her university chair in the 1369 academic year for failing to observe the regime's rules of conduct, that a court later cancelled the ruling too late, and that Ettelaat printed the news while Kayhan printed only the family's funeral notice. The English newspaper report located from those days is The Independent of 24 February 1994. Safa Haeri wrote that the Nation Party said she had poured petrol over herself and set herself on fire to protest the plight of Iranian women, and that she died of severe burns on Tuesday. In October 1994 Martha Shelley, writing in On The Issues Magazine from her sister Parvin Darabi, recorded the shout "Death to oppression! Long live liberty!", Parvin's figure of about 10,000 people at the funeral, and Parvin's account that U.S. television news shows declined the story because she had no photograph of the burning. Shelley wrote that word first went abroad on Israel's Farsi-language radio and then the BBC. Shahrokh Meskoob noted in Rooz-ha dar Rah that he had read an account of the Tajrish self-immolation in the Guardian; that clipping was not found in this search. Open web archives of the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Los Angeles Times did not yield a February 1994 story under her name.

Long live liberty!».

In the same month Parvaneh Forouhar said Darabi had been removed from her university chair in the 1369 academic year for failing to observe the regime's rules of conduct. A 2022 memorial post by Omid Shams dates that dismissal to 1365, for "bad hijab." Western legacy press coverage in February 1994 was sparse. The English-language report from that week is The Independent, 24 February 1994: Safa Haeri reported that the Nation Party said she had set herself on fire to protest the plight of Iranian women, and that she died of severe burns on Tuesday. In October 1994 Martha Shelley, in On The Issues Magazine, published a longer piece based on Darabi's sister Parvin, including the shout "Death to oppression! Long live liberty!", Parvin's estimate of about 10,000 at the funeral, and Parvin's claim that U.S. television news shows declined the story because she had no photograph of the burning. Shelley wrote that word first reached abroad via Israel's Farsi-language radio and then the BBC. Long live liberty!»
